AUTHENTIC TRUST

The notion of authentic trust is borrowed from the existentialist tradition, particularly from Kierkegaard and Heidegger, although what we mean by “authenticity” can be largely separated from the theological and ontological contexts in which they presented it. Authenticity involves a keen awareness both of one’s own identity and of one’s relationships with others, but it also involves a deep awareness that self-identity is fluid and uncertain and that our identities change with our circumstances and our commitments to other people. Authenticity is thus a practical notion, and it has to do with the ways in which we together invent ourselves and reinvent our world. We feel that people who authentically trust one another live in a more vibrant and adventurous world than those who do not. People in organizations who trust one another work in a richer, more flexible, and more innovative environment than those who do not, and the organizations flourish accordingly. Politicians and people in a democracy, if they would only learn authentically to trust one another, might then forge a just and harmonious (as well as prosperous) society.
